Pum update…2016, What a year!

2016 has been quite a year and I’m going into 2017 feeling positive and with a big smile.

One of the great things about writing a blog is the constant reflection.  If I want to look back on 2016 I just have to revisit my favourite posts and remember some of the amazing things I’ve been up to.

Among my highlights are a fantastic birthday weekend to the Peat Inn, a great work trip to Denmark and Sweden (where I tried some local treats), going to London to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the big holiday to New Zealand and Singapore.

We rounded off the year with our lovely Christmas treat of a stay at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh and we dined at Number One at the Balmoral, a wonderful restaurant holding a Michelin star for 13 years!

I actually had a think about all the restaurants we’ve been to in 2016 and it’s quite a number (woops); Peat Inn, Number One at the Balmoral, Gleneagles, Porter & Rye, The Butcher Shop, The Gannet, Ship on the Shore, Ondine, Grill on the Corner, La Vigna, Cau, The Spiritualist, The Wee Lochan, The Bridge Inn, The Railway Bistro, Doghouse, Duck Bay Marina, Andiamo, Hard Rock, The Big Slope, Elliots…

2017 is already an exciting year with Josh’s birthday trip to London (and dining in another Michelin star restaurant…we’re fairly racking them up), our holiday to Mauritius at the end of January, our anniversary in February, a family holiday to Spain in July, 2 hen weekends with some amazing girls in August (one of which is in Berlin), and that’s just to name a few things coming up…!

I’m also excited about leaving the festive period behind and getting back into my fitness routine and hopefully cooking a bit more than I have done in recent months.  January is always such a motivational time, I don’t care if some make fun of the vulnerable people who buy into fitness trends and fool themselves into thinking they’ll be a better person in the new year…I think it’s fab!

So Happy New Year to you and yours when it comes,

Pum reminiscing…The Peat Inn

Last week I mentioned that I would be dedicating a separate post to my birthday weekend at the Peat Inn, it was such a special weekend and is a place I would really recommend.  After much pestering, Josh finally told me what he was planning for my surprise birthday weekend which was an overnight stay at the Peat Inn, Michelin Star restaurant with rooms…needless to say on hearing this I was very excited!

The weekend started with a nice drive to South Queensferry for an early lunch and a short stretch of legs.  Despite being the start of October the weather was actually lovely, cold but bright.

14355653_10154534329814780_8918374533425925244_n

We then headed straight up to the Peat Inn (which is just 15 minutes drive from St Andrews).  The buildings and surrounding gardens were lovely and there’s something inviting about the ‘restaurant with rooms’ set-up, where everything felt quite exclusive.

The room was huge and all the little touches just made it extra special; sherry, coffee, brownies, champagne, Belgian chocolates…I definitely felt spoiled!

After a few hours of relaxing (and trying not to stuff our faces on all the goodies before dinner) we headed to the restaurant for our tasting menu.

Neither of us are fussy so we happily accepted the menu and welcomed trying some things we might not have ordinarily ordered.

In addition to the menu were a couple of amuse-bouches to begin with (including a very delicious venison sausage roll) and petit fours to end the meal.  The highlights for me were the 2 middle dishes – the confit egg yolk and the partridge.

Picture quality is not great, possible due to inhaling my food…

I hope I’m not over-exaggerating but I enjoyed every part of the weekend at the Peat Inn; the staff were friendly but not overbearing, the bed was one of the most comfortable I’ve slept in and the modest continental breakfast served in the room was actually much needed after overindulging the night before!

We rounded off the perfect weekend with a trip to my childhood holiday location, Largo, and a wander round St Andrews.  If any foodies in Scotland are looking for a special weekend away this is somewhere I’d definitely recommend!

Pum update…Gymwear Wishlist

I feel in need of a workout wardrobe refresh and here’s what I’ve got my eye on.  Somebody pry the credit card from my hand!!

Gym Leggings

My favourite of all gymwear, I do love a good pair of leggings!  The best place for leggings IMHO is H&M.  Affordable, comfortable and fashionable with a great selection, I don’t tend to deviate from here.

I noticed a couple of newbies to the collection that I’m keen to acquire…

Sports Bras

Now these bras mentioned here are not only on my wish-list but on my must-have list.  Serena Williams has named and promoted the brand of sports bras that she has used throughout her career, Berlei.  I had never heard of this Australian brand before and was intrigued…but half expecting an ugly industrial strength crop top!

Well I couldn’t have been more wrong!

Berlei has such pretty designs in a brilliant range of sizes, and delivers to the UK woo!

These two are currently in my basket with my finger hovering over the ‘checkout’ button (must resist, holidays to pay for!)

Workout Tops

Now I know this is completely buying into a brand name but if these gorgeous tops make me feel even remotely like an angel while working out I’m in.

I’ve never bought anything from the Victoria Secret’s Sport range but I’m seriously tempted.

I’m still super happy with the Adidas Ultra Boost that I got for Christmas last year and the best thing about them is they go with pretty much all gymwear!

Will keep you updated of any purchases!

Pum update…Eating In Lately

Last week I updated you on Eating Out Lately  so thought I’d pull together a post on some of my recent tasty eats-in.

I made my tried and tested lasagne  the other week and it was such a treat.  Thankfully Josh took a few portions home since I always make too much!

I’ve really been getting into scrambled eggs recently.  It’s funny I go through phases and when I’m off them I really can’t stand them but when I’m loving them I can’t get enough, hence the scrambled eggs for dinner tonight!

13689649_10154295161969780_1338720850_n.png

Followed by fruit salad with loads of pink grapefruit, fave!

13714322_10154280275739780_1900563051_n.png

Using half a roast chicken I whipped up a really yummy chicken soup on one of my Sunday cooking sessions.  The added rosemary really finished it off and I didn’t mind at all having this for lunch all week.

Not given up my porridge-loving-ways I’m back into the date syrup (with peanut butter obv).

I’ve also made a delicious new discovery of mint in salads.  Who knew?!  Definitely makes a green salad less boring!…

13705204_10154295162029780_785513181_n.png

Sticky honey, soy chicken has been one of my go to dinners lately, just really quick and easy to pull together!

13578900_10154253363449780_593665464_n

When the weather was gorgeous here I enjoyed dinner at Chez Cat’s (…aka Catriona’s house).  As soon as the sun’s out I become instantly jealous of people with gardens!  Cat served Asian salmon with mango salsa and salad.  It was sooooo good, perfect for outdoor dining.

13735497_10154297994504780_33979724_n.png

Josh has also made some pretty good meals recently, credit where credit’s due eh. Grilled asparagus with parma ham, chicken stuffed with black pudding wrapped in bacon with a whisky sauce (hello!) finished with rhubarb crumble.  Not even going to pretend this was a healthy dinner but it was bloomin’ good!

Aaaand rounding off today’s post is the immense chocolate calzone that Josh also made me (after the infamous ‘calzone incident’ where I wasn’t allowed to order a chocolate banana calzone in Zizzi lest we miss the cinema…joking, it wasn’t that bad but I still got a homemade calzone out of it).

Pum recommends…TRX Training

Before I started regularly going to the gym I’d never heard of, let alone tried, TRX training.  Initially the contraption looked scary and one I’d stay far away from at the gym.  Then after being shown how to use it plus a few simple exercises by one of my lovely gym instructors I have really enjoyed bringing this into my workouts.

TRX basically uses suspension to make normally bodyweight exercises much tougher.  It’s great for strength training but you can also incorporate cardio/plyo moves.

The best thing about TRX is that it can be used most places; in the gym, at home or traveling.  You just need to set it up over something like a door that can be fixed or even a sturdy tree if you like to workout outside.  The website here gives you all the info you need to set up.

Here’s some of the basic moves I like to use.  After a couple of circuits with 10-20 reps each you’ll be feeling the burn for sure!

One leg squat

Using the TRX for support, lift one leg and squat low.

TRX-Suspension-training-system-180732_L

One leg lunge

Secure one leg in the TRX and lunge low (balance is key in this one).

FB,620,70,trx-home-suspension-training-kit

Standing row

Use the TRX to pull your body upright (the lower the starting point the harder).

TRX_Row-45-deg

Jump squat

Similar to a normal jump squat, the support of the TRX will help you squat lower and jump higher.

Best-trx-exercises-3

Standing press

I think of this as a standing push-up (the lower the starting point the harder).

trx-chest-press1_0

Plank variations

Securing your feet in the TRX and planking is tough enough but there are so many variations such as; swinging forward and backwards, reaching out and tapping alternate hands and bringing your knees up to your chest and back down.  Definitely keeps it interesting!

trx-atomic-push-ups

For me it’s important not to get bored in the gym, especially if that’s mainly where you do your exercise.  I did a TRX workout today that my gym buddy Kasia came up with, one of us on the TRX and one using the bench then alternating.  4 different circuits with 2 exercises, 10 reps each, for 3 rounds.  Tough but fun!

If you’ve not tried it I definitely recommend checking out if your gym stocks the equipment and having a go!  The full professional kit can be quite expensive to buy but there are much cheaper alternatives out there from the likes of Amazon, Argos and even Aldi if you decide it’s for you.

Pum update…Redecorating and Home Inspiration

Hello…been a little quieter on pumdiets because for the past week-ish I’ve been living away from home (thanks mum and Josh) while my flat’s been getting painted.  It’s finally done but I now have the task of reorganising my things and giving the place a bit of a feng shui!

As a result of this, I’ve been changing up my usual food blogging antics and scouring the web for home inspiration.  I love finding out where people get their interior ideas from and (as with my favourite food blogs) can lose hours shopping for homeware online.

So I thought I’d share my favourite websites for browsing homeware, getting inspiration and maybe even making a cheeky purchase or two!

Pum’s homeware favourites…

Achica

By faaaaar my favourite spot for online homeware Achica is bloody amazing (thanks Vivi for the introduction)!  This site has so many great deals and changes so regularly, I’m always on here for updates and never get bored.  You need to move fast though…it’s happened more than once that before I’ve actually bought something I’ve gone away and come back to view the basket and the promotion has ended!

Zara Home

I love Zara Home particularly for decorative buys and bedding.  They also do fab basics that are really simple but still stylish.

1810007999_4_1_1

H&M Home

If you’re looking to keep things a bit cheaper definitely try out H&M Home.  I find this really good for quirky shower curtains, bathmats, throws and metallic ornaments to spruce up a dressing table without costing a fortune.

Etsy

Etsy is so great if you’re looking for something specific.  My absolute favourite item(s) of homeware in my house are my minimalist movie posters that I bought off Etsy (Forrest Gump, The Big Lebowski and Pulp Fiction) and framed myself with cheap white frames.  I just need to find a new home for them in my freshly painted flat!

13180819_10154125834559780_355765163_n

So back to my flat you’ll see from above I’ve gone for a mix of lighter and darker greys for paint.  I’ve continued this right throughout the flat and am pretty happy with my choice.
